April is both National Humor Month and National Poetry Month, and Painted Bride Quarterly has a way to celebrate both! Join us at the Pen and Pencil Club (1522 Latimer Street) at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2013 for our Slam, Bam, Thank You Ma’am, and a reading by the incredibly talented Frank Messina!
Messina, who was hailed by Playboy Magazine as “one of the most widely recognized young poets living in America today,” and called “a classic” by The New York Times, will kick off the night as only a celebrated author, performance artist, painter, poet, and musician knows how.
Frank Messina is the author of four books of poetry including the critically acclaimed Full Count: The Book of Mets Poetry and Disorderly Conduct. Messina’s poetry has been featured on the front page of The New York Times, “FOX News,” “PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,” “The CBS Early Show,” “SportsNet New York,” Sports Illustrated, “National Public Radio,” and the “British Broadcasting Network.”
His work appears in journals such as The Beloit Poetry Journal, Ground Zero: New Yorkers Respond, the 9/11 Peace Poetry Project, Long Shot Magazine, New York Press, Oxford Magazine, Published in Heaven Poster Series, Oxalis, Footwork: The Paterson Literary Review, Frank of Paris, Newark Writer’s Journal, Idiom, and Promethean Press. His work has also been the subject of commentary on such programs as “The Howard Stern Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and SNY-TV’s “Met’s Weekly.” You may recognize Messina no only for his literary fame, but also for his appearances on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.”
Having performed with such greats as Allen Ginsberg, Gil Scott-Heron, Courtney Love, Bill Kreutzman (Grateful Dead), Mike Gordon (Phish), Levon Helm, Leo Kottke, Max Creek, David Amram, and many others, on such stages as Shea Stadium, Lollapalooza, Woodstock ’94, Madison Square Garden, Nuyorican Poets’ Café, and elsewhere, there is no doubt the crowd at the P&P will be in the presence of a great. Andrew Keller will then take the reins and host yet another unforgettable Slam.
